Floating vs Glue-Down LVP on Georgia Concrete Slabs

Slab-on-grade construction changes the luxury vinyl plank conversation before a single sample hits the floor. On concrete, glue-down LVP produces the firmer, more permanent result, while floating LVP produces the more forgiving and repairable one — and the slab’s moisture and flatness pick the winner more often than personal taste does.

Which LVP install method is right for a Georgia concrete slab?

Choose glue-down LVP for the hardest-working rooms of a slab home — kitchens, family rooms, long open sightlines — and floating LVP where flexibility matters more than an anchored feel, such as finished spaces you may rework later or floors that need to go in quickly. That verdict assumes the concrete passes two tests first. Moisture: a vapor reading must fall within the plank and adhesive manufacturer’s limits, because vinyl traps whatever the slab releases beneath it. Flatness: most LVP systems tolerate roughly 3/16 of an inch of variation over 10 feet, and a slab outside that range needs grinding or self-leveling at about $2–3 per square foot before either method will behave. Treat the table as a starting position rather than a ruling. Some product lines are only warranted one way on concrete, and the room’s job can overrule the default in either direction.

Where a floating floor earns its place

A floating install suits rooms where adaptability is worth a little liveliness underfoot. Because nothing bonds to the concrete, the floor goes in faster, comes up cleaner if plans change, and lets a damaged plank be swapped without disturbing the whole room. For a home office that might become a nursery, or a finished slab room ahead of a larger phased remodel, that reversibility has real value.

The catch is that a floating floor reacts to whatever the slab is doing. Dips make planks flex and click underfoot, humps rock the locking joints loose over time, and trapped vapor condenses under the assembly. The system floats above the concrete; it does not fix the concrete.

Underlayment selection carries more weight here than most shoppers expect. The pad needs enough density to firm up the footfall and the right vapor rating for a Georgia slab, and very long open runs may call for transition moldings at doorways so seasonal movement has somewhere to go.

Where glue-down is worth the extra prep

Bonding the planks to the slab produces a floor that stays put — under a loaded bookcase, under rolling desk chairs, under a dog making the turn into the kitchen at full speed. In wide open floor plans, that anchored feel is the difference people notice when they walk a glue-down room after a floating one.

Edges are the quieter advantage. A bonded floor terminates crisply against cabinet toe-kicks, door casings, and built-ins, often with fewer transition strips interrupting a long run of plank. Rooms read more finished when the floor meets the millwork like it grew there.

The trade-offs are honest ones: adhesive work demands a cleaner, flatter, drier slab than a floating install tolerates, and future repairs go from a plank swap to a lift-clean-and-rebond job. You pay the care up front and collect the stability for years.

The slab makes the decision before you do

Moisture is the failure mode homeowners underestimate most. A slab can read bone-dry to the hand while pushing vapor upward all summer, which is why we test rather than eyeball — and why a reading above the product’s limit means mitigation, not hope. Skipping that step is how new vinyl floors cup, curl, and smell musty within a year.

Flatness comes next. Vinyl plank bridges small blemishes but telegraphs real waves, so anything beyond the typical 3/16-inch-in-10-feet tolerance gets ground down or leveled up at roughly $2–3 per square foot. Old adhesive residue, patched trenches, and cracks all get addressed in the same pass.

Sun and temperature swings matter more than the brochure suggests. Rooms with patio doors or tall south-facing windows heat the floor unevenly every afternoon, and that daily expansion cycle stresses a floating assembly more than a bonded one. Planning LVP inside a bigger project

Slab-level flooring rarely gets replaced alone. It usually meets a kitchen refresh, a stair landing, or a basement finish somewhere in the same footprint, and the install method ripples into those details: finish heights at cabinet runs, transition lines at hallways, trim reveals at door casings.

Sequencing is where method choice interacts with the rest of the schedule. A glue-down floor often precedes cabinet installation so the boxes sit on finished floor, while a floating floor may slot in after messier trades have cleared out. Frequently asked questions

Do floating LVP floors sound hollow on concrete?

They can, and the cause is almost always below the planks rather than in them. A thin or missing pad over concrete lets footsteps drum, and low spots in the slab create resonant pockets. A dense acoustic underlayment and a slab flattened to spec close most of the gap with glue-down; if a room already has a drummy floating floor, the cure lives underneath it.

Can you glue LVP to a slab with moisture problems?

Not until the moisture is dealt with. Adhesive applied over a damp slab is how bonds release and plank edges curl, so concrete that tests above the product’s vapor limit needs a mitigation coating or a different assembly before anything gets glued. The test itself costs very little next to replacing a failed floor, which is why it comes first on every slab project we take.

Is glue-down LVP more expensive than floating LVP?

Somewhat, in most cases: adhesive and extra slab prep add labor to a glue-down job, while a floating job adds an underlayment line instead. Both methods land inside the $5–12 per square foot installed range for the Atlanta market, and flattening a rough slab at $2–3 per square foot moves a quote more than the choice of method does.

Which install method makes future repairs easier?

Floating, generally. A damaged section of a click-together floor can be opened from the nearest wall or seam and rebuilt plank by plank. Repairing glue-down means lifting bonded planks, cleaning the adhesive bed, and setting new material — entirely doable, just slower. Keeping a spare box of planks from the original install makes either repair far simpler years later.
